Javier Baez had another big night going 4-4 with two homers and five RBI to help lead Tennessee to a 10-8 win over Birmingham. Boise snapped their four-game losing streak beating Salem-Kaiser.

AAA—Memphis 7, Iowa 1

Memphis (63-69) spoiled the opening night of Iowa’s (59-73) nine-game home stand.

At the Plate: Iowa only had four hits as Luis Flores’ (.218/.313/.335) RBI single in the fourth scored Brad Nelson (.262/.339/.463) for the only run of the night. Ty Wright (.263/.330/.419) had a one-out triple in the ninth but was stranded.

On the Mound: Yoanner Negrin (3-6 4.35 ERA) was solid for five innings allowing a run on four hits and a walk. He fanned two and threw 76 pitches in his 12th start of the season. Negrin hasn’t had much success as a starter but he does have value as a bullpen arm and should get a chance to compete next spring. The 29-year-old was signed in July of 2011 out of Cuba and spent part of 2012 on loan to Tabasco in the Mexican League (7-6 3.12 ERA/104 IP).......For the fifth straight game Alberto Cabrera (0-3 8.31) allowed a run, this time four of them, all earned. The right-hander gave up five hits, including a homer, and walked one...Jeffry Antigua (2-2 6.06 ERA) allowed two earned runs on three hits in two innings....Marcus Hatley (2-1 3.93) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with a strikeout.

AA—Tennessee 10, Birmingham 8

Javier Baez hit two homers, went 4-4, and knocked in five runs as Tennessee (70-57) beat Birmingham (72-57) for the third time in four games.

At the Plate: The Smokies needed four runs in the top of the ninth to break a 6-6 tie. Baez (.307/.366/.659) put the Smokies ahead in the ninth with a sacrifice fly and Christian Villanueva (.264/.321/.465) added a two-run double, his Southern League leading 39th. Jonathan Mota (.273/.347/.406) capped off the frame with a RBI single. Baez hit a three-run shot in the third and added a solo blast in the 7th. Arismendy Alcantara (.271/.347/.448) had a productive day at the dish going 2-3 with two runs, a RBI, two walks, and his 28th stolen base. Brett Jackson (.200.,297/.215) had two hits, including a double, while Matt Szczur (.280/.349/.370) doubled and scored twice. Rafael Lopez (.259/.360/.416) was 1-3 with a RBI and a run.

On the Mound: I’ll start with the good. Frank Batista (3-3 2.73) saved his 17th game allowing a hit in a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.....Matthew Loosen (1-3 7.36) fanned five in his 84-pitch, 5.2 inning start allowing three runs on five hits and two walks....P.J. Francescon had command issues walking three in 1.2 frames, allowing one run to score.....Tony Zych got charged with the blown save however a dropped fly ball by RF John Andreoli allowed two runs to score with two outs in the 8th. Zych (5-4 2.73) finished with a line of 0.2 IP, 3H 4R, 2ER, 1BB 1K.

Smokies Notes: Rafael Lopez reached base for the 21st straight game.....Looks like there may be some bad blood between the Smokies and Barons. In the top of the third, Birmingham pitcher Spencer Arroyo threw a pitch behind Tennessee catcher Luis Flores. The umpire quickly warned the pitcher and both benches. In the same at-bat, ball four was up and in at Flores’ head but no action was taken by the ump who had just warned both benches two pitched before........The win was manager Buddy Bailey 1,700 victory as a minor league skipper per Tennessee Smokies.

High A—Game 1—Daytona vs. Dunedin—Postponed after one inning

The two clubs will complete the first game on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m. EST and then play a second game. The second game of the DH scheduled for Wednesday night will be made up as part of a DH on Aug. 27 at Daytona.

On the Mound: Ben Wells (8-6 3.39) has become overlooked in a organization that continues to add pitching prospects through the draft and trades. Still only 20-years-old, Wells doesn’t posses over powering stuff but he does know how to pitch to contact and keep the ball down in the zone. He’s had a solid year (109 IP/1.23 WHIP) in what amounts to his first full-season as a professional after two stints on the DL set him back last year at Peoria. A seventh-round pick in 2010 out of Bryant High School in Arkansas, the 6-foot-2 right-hander needs to lower his walk rate of 3.3 per 9. In his last eight games heading into Wednesday night, Wells went 4-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 41.1 IP. He’s walked 14 but totes a slash line against of .209/.285/.297......Wells tossed a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout before the rains halted play.

Cubs Notes: SS Javier Baez was named an end of the season all-star for the Florida State League and manager Dave Keller was also honored. Baez hit .274/.338/.535 with 17 HR and 57 RBI in 76 games in the FSL.

Low A—Beloit 8, Kane County 5—10 innings

Beloit (70-58) scored three runs in the top of the 10th after Kane County (50-73) rallied to send the game into extra innings with three in the 8th and two in the 9th.

At the Plate: The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the ninth as singles by Trevor Gretzky (.100/.182/.100) and Oliver Zapata (.246/.323/.374) put runners on the corners. Jeimer Candelario (.252/.345/.387) ripped a RBI single to right scoring Gretzky and Rock Shoulders (.254/.349/.447) tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Giuseppe Papaccio (.279/336/.365) provided three runs with one swing of the bat in the eighth, a three-run double scoring Candelario, Shoulders and Carlos Escobar (.238/.299/.381). Candelario, Papaccio, and Marco Hernandez (.254/.290/.339) all had two hits.

On the Mound: James Pugliese made his Midwest League debut on Wednesday night and was greeted with a lead off triple that scored when the next batter grounded out. The Snappers tagged Pugliese for 10 hits, including a homer, and five runs but the right-hander did fan six and got six ground ball outs in five innings......Nathan Dorris (6-3 2.80) went four strong frames yielding a single and a walk with four punchouts...Michael Hamann (2-3 2.65) gave up a RBI singe and a two-run homer in the 10th as the Snappers got three hits off the right-hander

Cougars Notes: According to Kane County announcer Wayne Randazzo, the Cougars have allowed 114 first-inning runs, more than any other inning.....Trevor Gretzky got his first MWL hit, a single in the 9th.

Short-Season—Boise 5, Salem-Keizer 2

Boise (36-29) snapped a four-game losing streak beating Salem-Keizer (39-26).

At the Plate: The Hawks got their bats back on track knocking out 11 hits as eight of the nine starters got hits. Yasiel Balaguert (.282) and Lance Rymel (.263) both had two hits and two RBI. Daniel Lockhart (.297) added two singles while Carlos Penalver (.260) went 1-4 with a RBI.

On the Mound: Jose Rosario (2-0 1.80 ERA) went five innings giving up five hits and two walks, leading to two earned runs. He fanned five and got six ground ball outs. Jose Arias (1-0 0.00) came within an out of getting the save working 3.2 frames of shutout ball. Arias fanned four and gave up three hits and a walk....Eduardo Orozco (0-1 5.40) earned his first save striking out the final hitter of the game.

Arizona Rookie League—Diamondbacks 4, Cubs 3

Diamondbacks (26-23) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the win over the Cubs (24-26)/P>

At the Plate: Cubs made the most of their four hits plating three runs. Jeffrey Baez (.288), Tyler Alamo (.100) and Mark Malave (.248) all drove in a run. Jesse Hodges (.205) was 1-4 with a double and scored twice.

He yielded four hits, walked one and fanned three....Carlos Rodriguez threw 4.1 innings giving up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Luis Villalba (1-2 2.55) tried to save the game in the seventh but allowed a triple to tie the game and a single to put the D-backs ahead. He finished with a line of 1.1 IP, 2H, 1ER, 0BB, 3K.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 9, Mets I 4

Cubs (46-21) moved a game closer to a playoff bid beating the Mets (19-49) with a 10-hit attack. The Cubs have a 2.5 lead over the Pirates with 4 games to play.

At the Plate: Adonis Paula had two doubles and knocked in three runs as the third baseman was on base four times, walking twice. Jenner Emeterio had two hits and knocked in a run while Shamil Ubiera and Robert Garcia had two hits.

On the Mound: Jose Morel (0-0 0.00), signed in Jan. of 2012 for $80,000, tossed two scoreless innings in his second game as a professional. The 18-year-old stands 6-foot-6 and the lefty threw three scoreless frames in his pro debut back on Aug. 13....Andin Diaz (1-0 1.96) allowed all four runs on five hits and a walk but they were all unearned...Pedro Silverio, 19, (1-0 0.00) signed as a free agent last September earned his first professional win in just his third pro game. The 6-foot-2 ,210-pound right-hander tossed 2.1 scoreless innings giving up two hits and two walks with four strikeouts....Dilson Vasquez (1-0 1.96) worked a scoreless ninth.
