With the ascension of Kolten Wong to St. Louis and Oscar Taveras’ season-ending surgery, Springfield Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty is a serious contender for the Cardinals’ top position player prospect currently suiting up in the minor leagues.
Moved from third base to full-time outfield duty this season - his first full campaign as a professional - the former Stanford star has been excellent in the field. Already possessing a strong throwing arm, Piscotty showed off his glove work in this home-run-saving catch on Tuesday night. (Video is courtesy of friend Nick Carboni of Springfield’s KY3 TV.)
Piscotty also continues to shine with the bat. During the same Tuesday game in which he made the above catch, the right-handed hitter went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
In 36 games, 132 at-bats since joining the Texas League Cardinals on June 22, the 22-year-old has a line of .273/.353/.432, five home runs and 17 RBI.
After an initial adjustment period to the Double-A league, Piscotty has been steadily improving offensively. He has hits in nine of his last 10 games, including three multi-hit outings. During that time, the 6-foot-3, 210-pounder has a line of .333/.409/.513, two home runs, six RBI and even a pair of stolen bases.
Perhaps most impressive is his selective eye at the plate. With Springfield, Piscotty has drawn 16 walks against just 14 strikeouts, typically batting in the number five spot in manager Mike Shildt’s order.
