Cubs July 10 Minor League Recap

Tennessee swept Jackson in a twin-bill as Arismendy Alcantara hit his career-high 13th homer and the Mesa Cubs scored a season-high 14 runs in a win over the Padres that featured three pitchers making their pro debuts.

AAA—New Orleans 6, Iowa 5

New Orleans (45-48) raced out to a 5-0 lead and hung on to beat Iowa (47-47)

At the Plate: Brad Nelson went 3-5 with a RBI while Donnie Murphy and Anthony Giansanti had two hits. Iowa scored three times in the third with Luis Flores, Murphy and Ty Wright knocking in runs.

On the Mound: Nicholas Struck (5-6 5.91) gave up six runs, three earned on six hits and three walks. He also surrendered a homer and threw 97 pitches, 52 for strikes. Esmailin Caridad (3-3 5.02) tossed two scoreless frames and Michael Bowden held the Zephyrs in the 9th.

AA—Game 1 (Completion of June 28 game)—Tennessee 7, Jackson 2; Game 2— Tennessee 5, Jackson 2

Arismendy Alcantara's three-run homer in the second game helped Tennessee (12-8) sweep Jackson (10-10).

At the Plate: GAME 1—Smokies had 13 hits in the win. Justin Bour went 3-3 with 2 RBI and Arismendy Alcantara had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Christian Villanueva knocked in a pair (39) and Rubi Silva had two hits and scored twice. GAME 2—Smokies made the most of their three hits as Rubi Silva (11) and Alcantara (13) both left the yard. Silva hit a solo shot in the second and Alcantara's difference maker came in the fifth. John Andreoli walked and scored on a wild pitch. Javier Baez is 0-18 since hitting a homer in his first AA at-bat.

On the Mound: GAME 1—P.J. Francescon (1-0 1.69 ERA) earned his first AA win with three shutout innings allowing only a double. Carlos Gutierrez, who joined the team today, went right to work tossing two frames for his first save. He allowed an unearned run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. GAME 2—Eric Jokisch (8-7 3.21 ERA) allowed a run in the first two innings but shut Jackson down even through he walked six on the night. Jokisch threw 95 pitches with his final line of (5.2IP, 6H 2ER, 6BB 5K). Kevin Rhoderick got the final four outs, two on strikes, for his third save.

Smokies Notes: The first game was the completion of June 28 game that had the Smokies leading 2-1 bottom of the 2nd with two outs. One-third of the Smokies lineup on June 28 (Ronald Torreyes, Anthony Giansanti and Elliot Soto) are no longer on the roster…...RHP Carlos Gutierrez was assigned to Tennessee from Daytona. Gutierrez, 26, was signed as a free agent in Oct. of 2012 after spending five years in the Twins organization. He pitched two innings in the AZL before being promoted to Daytona (3G, 6IP, 3H 1ER, 2BB 3K)

High A—Lakeland 7, Daytona 6

For the second straight game Daytona (11-7) blew a big lead falling to Lakeland (7-10).

At the Plate: The Cubs had 12 hits as Dustin Geiger (.282/.352/.405) smacked his 10th homer of the year and added a RBI (67) single. Bijan Rademacher (.276/.344/.5552) had three hits, including a double, RBI, and scored. Elliot Soto (.292/.292/.375) scored twice on two hits with a RBI. Brad Zapenas went 2-4 and a RBI in his first game for Daytona.

On the Mound: Zach Cates (8-6 3.84 ERA/1.40 WHIP) threw seven innings limiting the Tigers to two runs on five hits and two walks. He retired 10 in a row at one point and left with a 6-2 lead. The 8th inning was a disaster for the Cubs as the Tigers scored five times on four hits and a walk. An error and a botched run-down added to the problems. Luis Liria (1-4 6.90) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits and a walk, getting only one out. Jeffrey Lorick (2-0 3.68) got the final two outs but gave up a single that plated two runs for his second blown save.

Cubs Notes: IF Tim Saunders was placed on the disabled list…..IF Brad Zapenas was assigned to Daytona from Tennessee…..RHP Carlos Gutierrez was assigned to Tennessee from Daytona…...Newly acquired RHP Ivan Pineyro was assigned to Daytona after being traded from the Washington Nationals for Scott Hairston.

Low A—South Bend 7, Kane County 2

Kane County (4-14) woes continued as the Cougars grabbed a 2-0 lead only to see South Bend (12-8) score the game's next seven runs.

At the Plate: All the runs came in the first on Jeimer Candelario's two-run homer (5) scoring Albert Almora, who singled. Almora (.356) and Candelario (.248) finished with two hits but once again the Cougars couldn't get the big hit going 0-7 with RISP.

On the Mound: Felix Pena (2-3 3.52 ERA) got the loss allowing three runs on six hits and four walks in six innings. The right-hander fanned two. Dillon Maples (0-2 8.31) didn't walk anybody but he didn't miss many bats as the Hawks added four runs on six hits in two frames.

Short-Season—Vancouver 6, Boise 5

Vancouver (16-10) scored a run in the bottom of the 8th to beat Boise (12-14) after the Hawks scored three runs in the top half of the frame to tie the game.

At the Plate: Shawon Dunston (.318) keeps hitting as the left-hander went 2-3 with a walk. Jose Dore (.200) blasted his first homer since joining the Cubs organization, a two-run shot in the first. The Hawks scored three times in the 8th, the final two coming a throwing error. Daniel Lockhart (.321) had a RBI single in the 8th

On the Mound: Duane Underwood (0-2 7.20 ERA) had his shortest outing of the year lasting only 2.2 innings as the young right-hander was charged with four runs on six hits and three walks. He fanned five but couldn't get out of the third. Jasvir Rakkar got the Hawks out of trouble in the third and worked a scoreless fourth recording three strikeouts. Zack Godley allowed his first pro run giving up three walks and a double in two innings. Scott Frazier surrendered his first pro run on two hits and Tyler Bremer tossed a scoreless eighth.

Hawks Notes: Boise Hawks announcer Mike Safford said the four players sent to the AZL from Boise—Yasiel Balaguert, Carlos Penalver, Trey Masek, and Trey Lang—all had issues with paperwork (visa, passport, international relations) and are expected to return to the team in Hillsboro…..Safford also provided pitcher's fastball velocities for Wednesday night: Underwood (93-94), Rakkar (89-90), Godley (93-94 1st inning and 90-91 2nd inning) Frazier 93-94.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 14, Padres 2

The Cubs (9-9) scored a season-high 14 runs beating the Padres (8-10)

At the Plate: Zak Blair (3R 2BB) Yasiel Balaguert (3R, 3B, RBI, 2BB), Francisco Sanchez (3R, 2B, 3B, RBI) and Xavier Batista (2R 3B 2RBI) had two hits while Wilfredo Petit knocked in four. Kelvin Freeman added 2 RBI. The Cubs had four triples, including three in a four-run seventh. They also drew 10 walks.

On the Mound: Three Cub pitchers made their pro debuts as RH Trevor Graham, (1IP, 1H), LH Tyler Ihrig (1IP, 1H 2K) and RH Josh Davis (1IP, 1H 1K) all worked a scoreless frame. Davis got his first pro win. Daury Torrez went the final four innings earning the save with a line of (4IP, 3H 2ER 0BB 7K). Marcos Mateo started, adding another inning to his rehab comeback, and Trey Lang worked a 1-2-3 fifth.

Cubs Notes: RHP Trevor Graham was assigned to Mesa and made his debut.
