Memphis (37-40) moved to within one game of first place hitting a pair of homers against Iowa (38-39)
At the Plate: An RBI single from Brad Nelson (2-4) in the first and a sacrifice fly from Dave Sappelt plated Iowa's two runs. Jae-Hoon Ha got his first AAA hit, a single in the 7th. Brian Bogusevic (.329) went 2-3 and scored both runs. Junior Lake extended his hitting streak to six games and is hitting (.389) in 18 games with 2HR, 11 RBI and 8 SB.
On the Mound: Chris Rusin (6-7 3.41) allowed six runs on seven hits, three walks, and two homers. He threw 89 pitches and ended the night with two strikeouts. Eduardo Sanchez (0-1 5.40) tossed two perfect innings against his old team.
Cubs Notes: The Cubs traded Iowa left-hander Hisanori Takahashi to Colorado for a player to be named later or cash. Takahashi started the year in Chicago (3G 0-0 6.00 3IP) but was sent down to Iowa. With the I-Cubs he went 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 27.1 IP, 25K, 8 BB, .152 BBA . Brett Jackson was placed on the Dl while OF Jae-Hoon Ha was promoted from Tennessee and Ian Stewart was activated after being suspended for his twitter rant.
AA—Chattanooga 11, Tennessee 8
Chattanooga (2-2) scored 10 runs in their final three at-bats to rally past Tennessee (2-2)
At the Plate: Matt Szczur (.298) has figured out AA pitching as the Smokies center fielder went 4-5 with three RBI. Szczur is hitting .347 in June. Ronald Torreyes (.265) had a two-run triple while Ty Wright (.258) and Jonathan Mota (.258) both had two hits. Rafael Lopez and Wright both knocked in runs.
On the Mound: A.J. Morris held the Lookouts to just one run in five innings but couldn't get out of the sixth as the first three hitter reached. The Lookouts scored two runs in the sixth and five in the seventh. Hunter Cervenka (1-1 7.62) was charged with two runs and Tony Zych (2-4 3.77) surrendered three runs and the lead. Kevin Rhoderick (0-2 6.12) yielded three more runs in the eighth on three hits.
High A—Daytona 2, Dunedin 1
At the Plate: Daytona roughed up Kyle Drabek, making a rehab start from Toronto, for five hits in 2.1 innings as Baez homered in the first, his 16th, and added a RBI single in the third, running his season total to 52. Dustin Geiger had two hits and Tim Saunders doubled.
On the Mound: Zach Cates and Yao-Lin Wang combined to hold Dunedin to one run on seven hits. Cates (7-6 4.18) got the win allowing a run on five hits and two walks with four punchouts. Wang (2-1 2.08) worked 2.1 scoreless innings of relief for his third saveCubs Notes: Seven of Javier Baez's last nine hits have been homers during a 10-game stretch….. RHP Pierce Johnson could make his Florida State League debut on Monday vs. Lakeland. Still no official word when Johnson will start, as Cubs Director of Player Development Jason McLeod told reporters today that Johnson is getting a break and it would be like missing a start. The right-hander made his last start for Kane County on June 16.
Low A— Quad Cities 6, Kane County 5—11 innings
Quad Cities (3-0) rallied for past Kane County (0-3) to sweep the series.
At the Plate: Kane County only had four hits but took advantage of their opportunities. Reggie Golden (1-4 .288) ripped a two run single in the fifth and Albert Almora (1-5 .375) smacked his second homer of the season, a two-run shot. Rock Shoulders (2-4 .270) hit his MWL leading 14th homer of the year. The Cougars did draw six walks.
On the Mound: LHP Michael Heesch (3-5 3.73 ERA) threw six shutout innings (6H 0BB) with six strikeouts and left with a 5-0 lead in his 13th start of the season. Cuban Armando Rivero made his pro debut but it wasn't good. The 25-year-old right-hander allowed five hits and four runs with a walk, recording only two outs. LHP Sheldon McDonald, assigned to Kane County a few days ago, made his 2013 debut in the MWL and threw 2.1 innings but surrendered an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth when Reggie Golden misplayed a base hit that allowed the tying run to score. RHP Stephen Perakslis (1-3 3.12) gave up a leadoff triple in the 11th on a close call at third. A single followed to end the game
Cougars Notes: Albert Almora was pulled from last night's game for not running out a fly ball. Kane County was 18-1 when leading after the 8th.
Short-Season—Game 1—Spokane 3, Boise 2; Game 2—Spokane 4, Boise 3
Spokane (3-6) got the early lead in both games and hung on for the sweep of Boise (4-5)
At the Plate: Boise had nine hits, walked twice but were just 1-10 with RISP including coming up without a run when they loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth. Justin Marra hit his first professional homer, a solo shot in the fifth. Trevor Gretzky (1-3) scored in the seventh on a wild pitch but the three Boise hitters struck out with the tying run at second. Gretzky, David Bote and Daniel Lockhart all had two hits.
On the Mound: RHP Loiger Padron (0-1 3.12) allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Ethan Elias (0-0 2.25) worked two scoreless frames as the Indians got one hit and two walks with two punchouts.
At the Plate: Shawon Dunston smacked his first homer of the season with a two-run shot in the third to extended his hitting streak to seven games. For the second straight night, Kevin Encarnacion homered in the sixth to extend his hit streak to seven games.
Arizona Rookie League—Diamondbacks 7, Cubs 5—10 innings
The D-Backs (1-1) scored two runs in the eight and two more in the 10th for the comeback win
At the Plate: SS Giuseppe Papaccio got the Cubs on the board in the third with a sacrifice fly, scoring C Alberto Mineo, who singled. LF Kevin Brown tripled and scored on a 3B Mark Malave's ground ball to first. Jeffrey Baez singled later in the inning to score Malave. OF Rashad Crawford added a RBI single in the sixth and an error scored another run.
On the Mound: 19-year-old Alexander Santana made his first start allowing three runs in 4.2 innings. He gave up three hits, one walk and fanned four. Angel Mejias, 19, threw 2.1 innings of shutout ball with a walk and a strikeout, retiring the final seven hitters he faced. Jorge Diaz allowed two runs to tie the game in the eighth, one unearned on a hit and a walk. David Villegas got the D-Backs out in the ninth but allowed a two runs on a pair of hits and a walk in the 10th for the loss.
Cubs Notes: Kelvin Freeman made his professional debut going 0-4 with a walk.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 3, Blue Jays 1 (June 21 Game)
Cubs (10-8) made the most of their five hits beating the Blue Jays (10-7)
On the Mound: Fraillin Figueroa (2-0 1.50 ERA) and Hector Perez (0-1 3.18) combined to hold the Jays to five hits. Figueroa fanned four in five innings of one-hit ball while Perez earned the save allowing a run in four innings with five punchouts.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 5, Rojos 0 (June 22 Game)
Three Cubs (11-8) pitchers combined to shutout Rojos (6-13)
At the Plate: The Cubs made the most of their five hits as they took advantage of three errors. Shamil Ubiera and Antonio Gonzalez both knocked in runs. Carlos Ramirez had two hits and Jenner Emeterio scored twice.
On the Mound: Jose Zapata (2-0 0.00) fanned six in five shutout innings as the right-hander gave up three hits. Jose Paulino (0-2 6.75) struck out seven in three innings and Jesus Baldayaque (0-1 3.18) got the final three outs, two on strikes as Cub pitching fanned 15.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 15, Rays 1
The Cubs (16-17) had 21 hits, at least one from every starter, including four homers to beat the Rays (10-23).
At the Plate: 3B Rony Alcala (.365/.402/.530) smacked a pair of homers as the 19-year-old went 3-6 with 3 RBI and 3 runs. Ricardo Marcano, a July 2 singing in 2011, had two hits, including a three-run shot, and had 4 RBI. Marcano (.281/.371/.488) leads the Cubs with 24 RBI. DH Roberto Vahlis homered and 1B Delbris Arcila (.299/385/.535) went 3-5. Bryant Flete (.290/.399/.379) knocked in three with two hits Victor Gomez, 18, made his pro debut going 3-5 with three run scored.
On the Mound: Cubs used four pitchers in the win but Adbert Alzolay, a 18-year-old right-hander, improved to 3-1 with a 1.13 ERA working 5.2 innings with four punchouts. He allowed a run on three hits. Alzolay, in his first pro season, has tossed 32 innings and has a BAA of .188. RHP Cesar Romero, 17, made his pro debut working a scoreless ninth
