Daytona’s Javier Baez went 5-6 with three doubles, six RBI, and a homer as the Cubs whipped Brevard County 14-5 with a 20-hit attack. Iowa lost in 13 innings to New Orleans. Tennessee fell to the White Sox AA affiliate 9-3 while Kane County got popped by Cedar Rapids 15-2.

New Orleans 7, Iowa 6—13 innings

New Orleans (26-29) rallied from a 6-1 deficit scoring twice in the ninth and then downed Iowa (24-30) in extra innings.

At the Plate: Logan Watkins got the offense going in the first with a double, took third on a passed ball, and scored on Brian Bogusevic’s groundout. Brett Jackson followed with this third home run of the year. Iowa added four runs in the third as Jackson led off the inning with walk and scored on Dave Sappelt’s double. Brent Lillibridge doubled to score Sappelt and the Ian Stewart followed with a double scoring Lillibridge and Dave Nelson, who walked.

On the Mound: RHP Guillermo Moscoso (2-2 4.79 ERA) toed the rubber for his seventh start Saturday night and recorded an Iowa Cubs season-high 10 strikeouts in his 5.2 innings. He yielded seven hits and walked two allowing four earned runs, three earned. LHP Hisanori Takahashi ( 0-0 3.38) and Casey Coleman (0-0 3.00) held the Zephyers hitless until the ninth. Eduardo Sanchez (0-0 4.97) was charged with his first blown save for Iowa as the right-hander allowed a walk and two hits in the ninth as New Orleans tied the game with a two-run double with two outs. Marcus Hatley (0-0 10.38) made his third appearance since joining the AAA squad working two shutout frames with frames with three strikeouts. Jeffry Antigua (0-1 4.50) called up from Class A Kane County earlier in the day, made his AAA debut in the 12th inning allowing two hits put got a pair of strikeouts. The lefty allowed a leadoff triple in the 13th that scored on a groundout. He finished with (2IP, 3H, 1ER, 1BB, 4K) The I-Cubs set a club record fanning 21 New Orleans hitter.

Birmingham 9, Tennessee 3

Birmingham (35-20) blasted four homers and beat Tennessee (28-26) for the second straight night to take the five-game series.

At the Plate: The Smokies got a two-run homer from Christian Villanueva, his fourth, in the sixth inning and Arismendy Alcantara smacked his eighth of the season, a solo shot, in the eighth. They had seven hits and walked five times but were 0-8 with RISP.

Smokies Lineup: Szczur RF (1-2 3BB), Torreyes DH (1-5 2B), Alcantara 2B (1-3 2R HR RBI BB), Villanueva 3B (1-4 HR 2RBI), Giansanti LF (1-4), Silva CF (0-4), Mota 1B (0-3 BB), Noble C (2-4), Soto SS (0-4)

On the Mound: RHP Matt Loosen (1-2 7.46 ERA) made his seventh start of the year and opponents continue to put runs on the board. Loosen allowed six hits, three homers, and walked four. He surrendered eight runs, only four earned as Tennessee committed three errors. He fanned three in 5.1 innings. Frank Batista (1-2 1.88) yielded three hits in 1.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout. Trey McNutt (2-4 5.16) allowed a solo homer in the eighth.

Daytona 14, Brevard County 5

Daytona (27-26) came out swinging scoring 14 runs in the first four innings with seven doubles and a pair of homers and finished the game with 20 hits clubbing Brevard County (28-26).

At the Plate: Javier Baez had his best day as a professional with five hits including three doubles and a homer. He also knocked in six runs and scored three times. “I was just looking for a good pitch to hit,” Baez told Daytona Cubs play-by-play announcer Cody Dunlap after the game. “We come here to play hard every day.” It was career-highs for Baez for hits, doubles and RBI. It wasn’t a one-man show as Ben Carhart and Wes Darvill both had three hits while Chadd Krist knocked in three runs. Dustin Geiger had two hits and added a RBI to his FSL league-leading total. Jorge Soler smacked his eighth homer of the season and scored two runs knocked in a pair. Daytona scored five runs in the second and added six more in the third. They ended the game with a season-high eight doubles.

Cubs Lineup: Saunders CF (1-4 2R 2BB), Carhart 3B (3-6, 2R, 2 2B, 2RBI), Baez SS (5-6 3R, 3 2B, HR 6 RBI), Soler RF (2-5 2R HR 2RBI), Geiger 1B (2-4, 2R, 2 2B, RBI, BB), Krist C (2-3 2B 3 RBI), Cabezas DH (0-2), Easterling LF (0-5), Darvill 2B (3-4 R BB), Davis C (2-5 2R)

On the Mound: P.J. Francescon (4-4 4.97 ERA) got a big lead and took advantage of the opportunity not walking a hitter in six innings. The right-hander allowed a run on five hits and fanned six, tying a season high. He threw 91 pitches. Austin Reed (0-0 5.88) gave up five hits and two walks yielding three earned runs in two innings. Sheldon McDonald (0-1 3.04) walked a batter, allowed a hit, and one run scored as the lefty pitched the ninth.

Cedar Rapids 15, Kane County 2

Cedar Rapids (35-19) scored the game’s first 12 runs and won easily over Kane County (24-29) for the second straight night.

At the Plate: Kane County scored twice in the fifth on a single by Albert Almora that scored Gioskar Amaya after a throwing error and Almora crossed home on a wild pitch. Oliver Zapata went 1-3 to extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Almora was 2-4 and is hitting .444 in nine games.

Cougars Lineup: Amaya 2B (1-3 R), Almora CF (2-4 R), Vogelbach 1B (0-4), Candelario 3B (2-4), Shoulders DH (0-4), Escobar C (1-3 2B BB), Zapata LF (1-3 BB), Golden RF (0-4), Hernandez SS (0-4)

On the Mound: Tayler Scott (2-2 4.56 ERA) had his toughest outing of the season allowing seven runs in four innings on seven hits and two walks. Four of the hits went for extra bases, including a homer, the third Scott has surrendered this season. Ian Dickson (2-2 7.22) didn’t have any better luck against the Kernals as the right-hander surrendered five runs on four hits and five walks in his two innings. Nathan Dorris (2-2 2.78) pitched a scoreless eighth and infielder David Bote gave up three runs in the ninth.
