So far this season, the Scout.com Players of the Week have been fairly clear-cut. This week, the race was a tight one.
On the one hand, you have the Major League leader in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS over the past seven days – Houston Astros catcher Jason Castro -- who slugged three homers and one double while driving in five runs and going 11-for-19 at the dish.
On the other, you have previous Scout.com Player of the Week Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who went 12-for-26 from May 20-26, with two homers, an MLB-best 10 runs scored and four stolen bases (without being caught once), along with seven RBIs and two homers.
On a third hand, Miguel Cabrera -- the MLB-leader in RBIs (10) over the past week -- hit three dingers and scored eight runs while hitting .308.
On still a fourth hand, you have Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander, who went 2-0 with a best-in-baseball 22 strikeouts, and yet had a 6.00 ERA in the last week. That particular brand of dissonance is almost enough on its own to merit a POW nod, just for shock value.
But, at the end of the day, production and results are the hallmarks of this particular weekly feature, and no one was more productive than Trout, who, by driving in or scoring 15 of Los Angeles’s 41 total runs, accounted for 36.6% of the Halos’ offensive production en route to earning his second POW nod of the season.
Trout helped fuel six straight wins by the Angels, while Verlander’s ERA and Castro’s 2-4 cellar-dwelling Astros are both a bit too jarring to be POW-worthy.
Over the past week, Trout has collected multiple hits in four of six games, trailing off only over the last two games, where he’s gone 2-for-9. Before that, the Angels outfielder was 10-for-17 with eight runs, one double, two triples and two home runs.
