Pierce Johnson fans eight in win,

The 43rd pick in last year's draft, Pierce Johnson has been living up to the hype as the right-hander fanned eight to lead Kane County over Peoria. Iowa beat Oklahoma City while Tennessee and Daytona lost.

Kane County 8, Peoria 1

Kane County (21-24) got a strong pitching performance from Pierce Johnson to salvage the final game of the series at Peoria (23-22)

At the Plate: The Cougars scored four runs in the fourth, three coming on a triple from Yaniel Cabezas that cleared the bases. David Bote followed with a single scoring Cabezas. Kane County loaded the bases again the seventh and scored when Rock Shoulders walked. Marco Hernandez made it 6-1 with a RBI single and a wild pitch plated another run. Bote drove in his second run of the game with a ground ball out for a 8-1 lead. Albert Almora went 1-3 with a pair of walks and finished his first three-game series in the MWL 8-14 with three doubles and two RBI.

On the Mound: RHP Pierce Johnson (3-3 3.04 ERA) struck out eight Chiefs working into the seventh to earn his third win of the season. Johnson gave up six hits, two walks, and one earned run. He threw 91 pitches and left in the seventh with two outs. Johnson has fanned 53 in 47.1 innings. Stephen Perakslis (0-2 4.30) retired all seven of the Peoria hitters he faced on 33 pitches, 21 strikes. The right-hander fanned two and got five ground ball outs.

Iowa 5, Oklahoma City 4

Iowa (20-25) made the most of their five hits, scoring four runs in the first to beat Oklahoma City (27-20)

At the Plate: Walks to Ian Stewart and Darnell McDonald with the bases loaded in the first gave Iowa a 2-0 lead and a base hit by J.C. Boscan scored two more. Josh Vitters blasted his third homer in the third, a solo shot. Vitters' homer was Iowa's last hit of the game.

On the Mound: Nicholas Struck (3-3 5.93) went 5.1 innings allowing six hits, five walks, and three earned runs to earn the victory. Struck threw 106 pitches and allowed two homers, both solo shots. Esmailin Caridad (3-2 6.05 ERA) allowed a sacrifice fly in the sixth after a wild pitch and a hit batter. He walked the leadoff hitter in the seventh and left with an injury. Hisaniro Takahashi (0-0 4.15) got out of a bases loaded jam after a sacrifice fly pulled the Red Hawks to within a run. Zach Putnam (1-1 3.44) pitched the final two frames to earn his third save of the season

Huntsville 6, Tennessee 2

Hunstville (21-26) scored five runs off the Tennessee (24-22) bullpen for the victory.

At the Plate: Tennessee's first run of the game came in the second on Rubi Silva's eighth homer of the season, as the left-hander keeps adding to his career season high. The Smokies added a run in the ninth when Silva singled and scored on a base hit by Tim Torres.

On the Mound: Yeiper Castillo, just called up from Class A Daytona, made an impressive AA debut for the Smokies tossing six frames with seven strikeouts and three hits. The only run came on along homer to right field in the second. He threw 81 pitches, 51 for strikes and got eight ground ball outs. Trey McNutt (2-4 5.49) took the loss allowing a two-run homer in the seventh. Kevin Rhoderick (0-0 6.61) gave up an unearned run in the eighth and Tony Zych (0-2 4.74) gave up a two-run homer in the ninth.

Lakeland 7, Daytona 3

Lakeland (18-29) scored five runs in the top of the sixth to down Daytona (23-23) in the opening game of the series

At the Plate: Dustin Geiger added to his FSL leading RBI total in the first inning driving home Zeke DeVoss and Jorge Soler with a two-out, two-run single. Geiger is third in FSL in batting average (.329). Singles by Javier Baez, Soler and Geiger loaded the bases in the eighth and Baez scored on Benjamin Carhart's groundout. Baez extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a pair of base knocks and is hitting .381/.422/.524 during the streak.

Cubs Lineup: DeVoss CF (0-3 BB), Andreoli LF (3-5 R 2B), Baez SS (2-4 R), Soler RF (1-3 R BB), Geiger 1B (2-4 2RBI), Carhart 3B (1-4 RBI), Krist C (0-3 BB), Darvill DH (0-4), Saunders 2B (0-4).

On the Mound: Ben Wells (3-2 4.08) tossed five good innings but allowed the first two hitters of the sixth to reach before being taken out. He was charged with three runs, two earned, walked two, and got a pair of Flying Tigers on strikes. LHP Frank Del Valle (2-0 3.27) had his worst outing of the season getting touched up for four runs and three hits in two innings and charged with his first blown save of the year. Del Valle had only allowed four runs in his previous 12 games, totaling 20 innings. Austin Reed (0-0 5.32) had another positive performance working two scoreless frames.
