Jorge Soler, pictured, hit a long homer in Daytona’s sixth straight win while Kane County got seven strong innings from Felix Pena for their fifth straight. Tennessee was shutout and Iowa was postponed for the third straight day.

Daytona 11, Lakeland 5

Daytona (16-12) won its sixth straight game as Jorge Soler and Taylor Davis both homered in the win over Lakeland (11-15).

At the Plate: The Cubs only got nine hits but took advantage with a pair of homers and six two-out RBI. John Andreoli got the offense started with a triple in the fourth and scored and Zeke DeVoss’ fly ball. Andreoli, who had three hits, ripped his second triple of the night in the sixth, scoring Taiwan Easterling. Javier Baez followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. Jorge Soler then crushed a pitch over the left field berm for his third homer of the season. Daytona broke the game open in the 7th with five runs as they loaded the bases and two walks and a hit batter scored three runs. Dustin Geiger capped the inning with a two-run single. Taylor Davis made the most of his first at-bat after coming off the disabled list smacking a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the eighth. Benjamin Carhart (.314) had two hits.

Cubs LIneup: Andreoli LF (3-4, 3R, 2 3B, RBI, BB), DeVoss CF (0-3 R 2 RBI), Baez SS (0-3 2R RBI), Soler RF (1-3 HR 2RBI 2BB), Geiger 1B (1-5 2 RBI), Carhart 3B (2-5 R), Giansanti 2B (1-5 R), Noble C (0-3 R), Davis PH (1-1 HR 2RBI)

On the Mound: P.J. Francescon (3-2 4.80 ERA) turned in his third straight quality start tossing six shutout innings with five strikeouts. He allowed three hits and walked one, getting six groundouts and seven fly ball outs. Starling Peralta continues to struggle in the FSL as the right-hander yielded five runs on six hits in 1.2 IP. His ERA is now 9.88. LHP Sheldon McDonald (0-1 3.75) got the final four outs

Cubs Notes: Placed Stephen Bruno on the 7-day disabled list and activated Taylor Davis from the 7-day disabled list…..Benjamin Carhart did some damage at Lakeland in the eighth inning as a foul ball off his bat shattered a Detroit Tigers sign….The Cubs are now only one game out of first place in the FSL North Division behind Dunedin

Kane County 6, Dayton 1

Kane County reached the .500 mark for the first time this season with their fifth win in a row riding a strong pitching performance from Felix Pena, who fanned seven in seven innings.

At the Plate: Oliver Zapata gave the Cougars a lead with a solo homer in the third, his second. Jeimer Candelario led off the fourth with a walk and went to third on Rock Shoulders’ single He then scored when Wilson Contreras grounded into a double play. Contrereas delivered in his next at-bat clearing the bases with a three-run double. Bijan Rademacher followed with his third hit of the night, a run-scoring double plating Contreras.

Cougars Lineup: Chen LF (1-5 R), Amaya 2B(1-3 2B BB), Vogelbach 1B (0-2 2 BB), Candelario 3B (0-2 R 2 BB), Shoulders DH (1-3 BB), Contreras C (1-4 2B 3 RBI), Rademacher RF (3-4 2B RBI), Hernandez SS (1-4), Zapata CF (2-4 HR RBI).

On the Mound: RHP Felix Pena (1-0 2.37 ERA) got his first MWL win of the season tossing seven strong innings with a season-high seven strikeouts. It was the longest outing for a Cougar starter this year. He surrendered four hits, one walk, and one earned run. RHP Justin Amlung (3-0 4.26 ERA) pitched two scoreless innings but he did allow three hits and a walk.

Cougars Notes: Star Wars Night was a big hit at Kane County as they drew a season-high 10,697 fans.

Mississippi 8, Tennessee 0

Mississippi (18-11) pounded out 12 hits off Tennessee (15-13) pitching while blanking the Smokies on four hits.

At the Plate: The Smokies only managed four hits and didn’t have a runner reach third base.

Smokies Lineup: Szczur CF (0-4), Torreyes 2B (0-3 BB), Alcantara SS (1-4), Silva RF (0-3) Soto PH (0-1), Villanueva 3B (02 BB), Lopez C (1-3), Mota 1B (1-3), Jokisch P (1-1), Chavez RF (0-1).

On the Mound: Eric Jokisch (3-2 3.34 ERA) got hit hard for the first time this season as the Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April allowed seven hits and six runs in three innings. He walked four and fanned three in 79 pitches. Tony Zych (0-2 3.29 ERA) allowed a run in two innings of relief on a hit and two walks. Kevin Rhoderick (0-0 9.72 ERA) tossed two innings, allowing three hits, three walks, and a run. Brian Schlitter (0-1 0.00) added another inning to his unearned run streak, 12.1 innings in nine games.

Iowa

Iowa’s game with Oklahoma City was postponed due to wet conditions.

Cubs Notes: 3B Ian Stewart has been optioned to Iowa by Chicago and OF Brett Jackson has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with turf toe. Cubs relief pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa is scheduled to pitch on Sunday in a rehab assignment and RHP Matt Garza will take the mound on Monday.
