Cards send down two in fifth cuts of spring

Pitchers Michael Blazek and Eric Fornataro were optioned out by the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.

Following Friday's game, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that right-handed pitchers Michael Blazek and Eric Fornataro have been optioned to the roster of Triple-A Memphis.

Each pitcher appeared in six Grapefruit League games and posted a 1.50 ERA with no decisions. As a parting gift, both pitchers were given an inning of work against Detroit on Saturday, and both tossed a scoreless frame.

Fornataro
Fornataro, 25, finished last season with Double-A Springfield and was added to the Cardinals' 40-man roster in November. The hard-throwing right-hander is The Cardinal Nation's 27th-ranked prospect.

Blazek, who celebrated his 24th birthday on Saturday, ended 2012 in Memphis' bullpen, but had primarily been a starter prior. The right-hander joined the 40-man roster with Fornataro in November.

After the moves, the Cardinals now have 43 players assigned to major league camp – 33 members of the 40-man roster and 10 non-roster invitees. 19 are pitchers with 24 position players. Two of the 43 remain temporarily away for the World Baseball Classic; Carlos Beltran (Puerto Rico) and Yadier Molina (Puerto Rico). Mitchell Boggs (USA) returned to Cardinals camp on Saturday.

Fornataro and Blazek will join over 160 peers currently participating in minor league camp. (link to roster details for subscribers)
