Orioles: Winter League Report 12/28

ITO takes a look at how members of the Orioles organization did in winter league ball.


The Orioles grabbed Alexi Casilla off waivers November 30th from the Minnesota Twins. Casilla went 4-for-5 with a triple, homerun and two RBI to help Leones del Escogido defeat Estrellas 12-5 and improve to 2-0 in the round-robin playoffs.

Gigantes del Cibao

- Garabez Rosa appeared in 10 games. He went 4-for-13 with a triple and two RBI’s.

Leones del Escogido

- Pedro Strop pitched in eight games, all in relief. He pitched 9.2 innings had a 2.79 ERA and earned four saves and a win. He allowed four hits walked two and struck out eight. Escogido is still in the playoffs.

- Pedro Florimon appeared in 38 games and hit .260 with three RBI.

- Buck Britton only appeared in nine games.

- Ryan Flaherty appeared in 13 games.

Season-to-date: 13 G, 43 AB, 7 R, 9 H, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 6 BB, 13 SO, .209/.306/.233/.539

- Alexi Casilla was a mainstay at second base for Escogido.

Season-to-date: 37 G, 152 AB, 24 R, 44 H, 9 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 11 RBI, 12 BB, 17 SO, 7 SB, 3 CS, .289/.349/.428/.777

- Orioles Conor Jackson was a former first round draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2003. He spent 2012 in the Chicago White Sox organization at the Triple-A level. He only appeared in three games for Escogido.

Season-to-date: 3 G, 10 AB, 2 R, 4 H, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, .400/.455/.700/1.155

Tigres del Licey

- Right-handed pitcher Daniel McCutchen signed with the Orioles in early November to a minor league deal. He came to the Orioles from Pittsburgh and appeared in 108 major league games in three years. For Licey, he appeared in five games.

Season-to-date: 1 W, 1L, 10.13 ERA, 5 G, 3 GS, 8.0 IP, 16 H, 12 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 8 SO.


Algodoneros de Guasave

- Third basemen Zelous Wheeler went 1-for-4 in a 4-1 loss to Mexicali.

Naranjeros de Hermosilo

- Zech Zinicola became an Oriole this offseason. He was suspended 50 games in January for using synthetic marijuana. Zincola entered in the sixth inning with a runner on third and two outs. He allowed the run to score but then got out of the inning. He retired the side in the seventh. He earned his eighth help of the season. He pitched 1.1 innings yesterday allowing 1 hit, striking out one in his teams 5-2 loss.

Season-to-date: 2-2, 5.53 ERA, 25 games, 1 SV, 27.2 IP, 31 H, 21 R, 17 ER, 4 HR, 9 BB, 22 SO.


Caribes de Anzoategui

- Catcher Jose Gil was signed by the Orioles in early December from the New York Yankees. Gil went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. He helped Caribes to a 10-9 win over Lara.

- Shortstop Niuman Romero was signed by the Orioles in December. He spent last season in the Detroit organization. Yesterday he went 2-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI in Caribes’ 10-9 win over Lara.

Season-to-date: 60 G, 236 AB, 33 R, 63 H, 14 2B, 4 HR, 30 RBI, 22 BB, 39 SO, 1 SB, 4 CS. .267/.328/.377/.705

Romero’s stats this week: 6-for-15, 5 R, 5 RBI, .400

- Catcher Michael Ohlman went 1-for-5 in yesterday’s 3-2 loss.
