The Cubs acquired outfielder Abner Abreu and right-handed pitcher Carlton Smith from the Cleveland Indians for outfielder Kosuke Fukudome and a cash consideration Thursday. In addition, outfielder Tyler Colvin was recalled from Triple-A Iowa.

Abreu, 21, is in his fifth professional season after signing with the Indians as a non-drafted free agent on October 4, 2006 out of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. The right-handed hitter and fielder owns a .267 batting average (379-for-1,418) with 82 doubles, 26 triples, 38 home runs and 201 RBI in 367 career minor league games.

In his second year with Single-A Kinston, Abreu is hitting .244 (82-for-336) with 16 doubles, five triples, 12 homers and 35 RBI in 91 games. He has a career-best 19 stolen bases, and has been caught stealing just three times. Abreu is batting .352 (25-for-71) with eight home runs and 17 RBI this month, and has been twice named Carolina League Player of the Week (weeks ending July 10 and July 24).

The 6-foot-3, 192-pound Abreu led the Gulf Coast League in 2008 with a .538 slugging percentage, 11 home runs, 107 total bases and 31 extra-base hits for the Indians. He batted a career-best .305 (75-for-246) for Single-A Lake County in 2009 before posting a .252 average (103-for-409) in 106 games for Kinston last year.

Smith, 25, was selected by Cleveland in the 21st round of the 2004 Draft out of Piscataway (N.J.) High School. He owns a 36-28 record with eight saves and a 4.21 ERA (250 ER/535.0 IP) in 194 games (66 starts) over seven minor league seasons. In 2008 with Single-A Kinston, he led the Carolina League with 12 wins and ranked third with 146.1 innings of work and 11.13 baserunners per 9.0 innings pitched. Smith was named to the 2009 Eastern League All-Star team, posting a 6-2 record with three saves and a 2.72 ERA (24 ER/79.1 IP) for Double-A Akron that year.

This season with Triple-A Columbus, Smith is 2-3 with two saves and a 4.50 ERA (23 ER/46.0 IP) in 34 relief appearances, including a 3.38 ERA (4 ER/10.2 IP) in seven July outings. Since moving primarily to the bullpen in 2009, Smith has logged a 4.02 ERA (82 ER/183.2 IP), striking out 124 compared to 66 walks in 117 appearances (two starts).

Colvin, 25, is hitting .256 (52-for-203) with 12 doubles, six triples, seven home runs and 32 RBI in 50 games for Iowa this season. The left-handed hitter begins his third stint with the Cubs this year, having compiled a .105 batting average (10-for-95) with four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI in 38 contests from Opening Day-May 17 and May 31-June 14.

Colvin owns a .221 batting average (104-for-470) with 22 doubles, five triples, 22 home runs and 66 RBI in 179 major league contests since he made his debut with Chicago in September of 2009. His 20 home runs last season were fourth-most by a rookie in franchise history.

Fukudome, 34, signed with the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent December 19, 2007 and batted .262 (432-for-1,651) with 98 doubles, 12 triples, 37 home runs and 169 RBI in 513 contests for Chicago . The 2008 N.L. All-Star appeared in 87 games for the Cubs this season, batting .273 (80-for-293) with 15 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 13 RBI.
