Cubs Lose Two in Rule 5 Draft

Posted Dec 9, 2010

The Cubs acquired right-hander Mason Tobin in the Rule 5 Draft from the Angels Thursday, then traded him to the Rangers in a pre-draft move. Nothing gained, nothing lost. Chicago, however, did lose two pitchers in the annual event at the Winter Meetings.

Right-hander Ronny Morla and left-hander Casey Lambert were selected by the Mets and Orioles, respectively, in the Triple-A phase of the draft.

Morla, 22, spent all of last season at Class-A Peoria, where he was 4-3 with a 4.00 ERA in 43 games in relief. He struck out 86 and walked 20 in 78 2/3 innings.

Chicago got Morla from the Oakland A’s the previous off-season as part of a trade that shipped INF Aaron Miles and Jake Fox to Oakland for three minor leaguers.

Lambert, who turns 25 Saturday, had a bit more service time in the Cubs’ system. Drafted in the sixth round from Virginia in 2007, he spent the past four seasons at various levels in the organization – most of them as a reliever.

Lambert advanced to Triple-A Iowa in 2009 before having his season cut short due to injury. He underwent Tommy John surgery after the season and returned last June in the Arizona Rookie League, eventually working his way back up to Class High-A Daytona. He was 1-0 with a 2.95 ERA in 14 games there.
